Tip

Today’s workforce includes members of five different generations, and for managers, that presents both opportunities and challenges. There are several ways to reap the benefits of generational diversity.

First, challenge stereotypes. It’s easy to make overgeneralization about one generation or another but those characterizations can be harmful and foster dissent.

Debunk them, and encourage mutual respect. Ask your team to be open about their preferences, particularly around communication. Different generations may prefer one method over another, but make clear there is no right or wrong way to interact.

Finally, don’t play favorites. During meetings, go the extra mile to make sure every voice is heard and considered, regardless of someone’s age or level of seniority. Instead of perpetuating an “us versus them” dynamic, change the narrative to respect and understanding.
